Call for Nominations: Winnipeg’s First Poet Laureate

31 August, 2017

A Poet Laureate participates actively in the cultural life of the city and serves as a literary ambassador. The Poet Laureate writes poems, but also takes on the role of celebrating the city and facilitating connections between communities through the arts.

The Winnipeg Arts Council is launching the search for our city’s first Poet Laureate, to be named in the fall of 2017. Many Canadian cities have Poets Laureate, but this position will be a first for Winnipeg. The individual named to the position will be responsible for the creation of new poetic works as well as the implementation of programs to engage the public through poetry.

Winnipeg’s Poet Laureate will be a professionally published/presented poet or spoken word artist with an established body of work, recognized for artistic excellence. Our Poet Laureate will have had a demonstrable impact upon and recognition by the literary community.

Winnipeg’s Poet Laureate will be selected by a jury for a 2-year term during which they will create and present new poetic works and produce signature events related to poetry for the public of Winnipeg. The Poet Laureate will receive an honorarium of $5,000 per year for the two-year term.

Applicants may be nominated or self-nominate for the position. For full details including the application/nomination requirements please see the downloadable guidelines and forms below.
